Turanga Creek – Natural Aspirations in Whitford

23-Aug-2011
Turanga Creek is the first certified organic vineyard in the Auckland area. Situated south-east of Auckland city in the Manukau district, the Whitford property has long been a horse stud. The 24 ha property was acquired over twenty years ago by Wayne and Mandy Allen, who just six years ago began a total redevelopment to create a vineyard to make high quality wine, inspired by those of Bordeaux and the Esk Valley in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Turanga Creek gained BioGro certification in March this year, and the Allens see this as being an integral part of their wines expressing the terroir of their site. The Allens have surrounded themselves with highly experienced people. Margaret Boswell is the vineyard manager, having spent six years at nearby Puriri Hills as vineyard manager and assistant winemaker. Rod McDonald is the winemaker, and Loic Parola, who came from the wine industry in France to work with the Allens. The aspirations at Turanga Creek are very high and very natural. www.turangacreek.co.nz
