Tussock 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, and 2012 Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir

05-Sep-2013
Woollaston Estates in the Upper Moutere, Nelson is quickly realising the potential of its certified organic vineyards made at the modern winemaking facilities on Old Coach Road. Under the care of vineyard manager Julian Coakley, the vines are becoming even more balanced and consistent in their yields. Winemaker Shane Munn is enjoying making the wines, and it shows in the ever increasing interest and quality captured in them. I’ve been impressed with recent releases, and the latest flagship ‘Mahana’ examples signal the intent to show what the team can do. This bodes extremely well for the value ‘Tussock’ range, as these wines will benefit from the filtering down of the quality. The ‘Tussock’ range refers to the Silver Tussock that is native to this country’s high country. The name for this range of wines is apt, as the Woollaston winery has a ‘living roof’ of tussock and shrubs. Here, I review the latest ‘Tussock’ releases, possibly the best yet of this entry level tier. www.woollaston.co.nz
