Tussock Nelson Pinot Noir 2010

01-Nov-2013
I’ve seen a number of the ‘Tussock’ entry level wines for Woollaston Estate, mainly soon after their release. But as is often the case, some bottle age is required to allow the inherent quality and personality of a wine to show. The Tussock Pinot Noir 2010 is one such wine. Several months ago, in a discussion with Woollaston’s winemaker Shane Munn, he noted he wasn’t quite happy with the ‘second tier’ nomenclature which inferred lower quality. For him, the wines are expressions of different sections of the vineyards, all of which are managed to the same level. Thus, I see Tussock wines as being approachable earlier, and may not have the level of detail and complexity of the ‘Woollaston’ and ‘Mahana’ wines, but they should not lack character and personality. It was with these thoughts in mind that I looked at the Tussock Pinot Noir 2010. www.woollaston.co.nz
