Two Paddocks Late Harvest Riesling 2012

26-Aug-2014
The other great variety in Central Otago is Riesling, and Sam Neill’s ‘Two Paddocks’ brand has two Riesling styles to complement his range of Pinot Noirs, being the juicy and accessible ‘Picnic’ wine, and the drier, more textural ‘Two Paddocks’ bottling. The Riesling fruit comes from two 1 ha blocks at the Red Bank vineyard in Earnscleugh with 198 and ‘Felton Road’ clones planted at 5,500 vines per hectare. In 2012 came the one-off opportunity of exploring a sweeter style by leaving a small section for later harvesting. The extra ripening was overseen by viticulturist Mike Wing and winemaker Dean Shaw produced a ‘spatlese’ style. Only 50 dozen was bottled and the wine will be released domestically later this year. I review the wine here. www.twopaddocks.com
