Urlar Gladstone 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Pinot Noir

04-Jun-2015
The Urlar winegrowing venture of Angus and Davina Thomson has added much depth to the already strong outpost of wine producers in the Gladstone district of the Wairarapa. The region shares similar, though not identical climate and geological traits to the better known Martinborough vignoble, but it logical to group them together under the ‘Greater Wairarapa’ moniker as stylistically and arguably quality-wise, there is a real cohesion.

Urlar is particularly noteworthy for its environmentally responsible stance, the 31 ha vineyard certified BioGro organic since 2010. The Thomsons employ biodynamic regimes as well. The highly regarded Guy McMaster is the winemaker, and he has guided the wines to their present high level of quality. Recently, Urlar launched the ‘more adventurous’ ‘Select Parcels’ range, a selection of more interesting barrels (click here to see my reviews). However, the ‘estate’ wines are regarded as the premium. Here I review the new release ‘estate’ 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Pinot Noir. www.urlar.co.nz
