Urlar – Reflecting the Gladstone Terroir

16-Jan-2012
Angus Thomson is very passionate about the Gladstone district of the Wairarapa, and his Urlar wines are made to be fully expressive of the 32 ha site sitting above the Ruamahanga river on Dakins Road. The Urlar vineyard's soils are slightly heavier than the finer soils next to the river's edge, and this it seems has provided wines with somewhat greater richness and amplitude than those of his neighbours. Thomson and his winemaker Guy McMaster maximise these characters by building in layers of complexity, and this has quickly earned the Urlar wines recognition for their interest and quality. The vineyard is managed to organic and biodynamic principles, fully certified BioGro organic from the 2010 vintage, and no doubt Thomson and McMaster would say this is a factor in their wines being terroir expressive.
