Urlar Revisited

25-Mar-2011

In the Wairarapa, there is a good feeling prevailing, following a series of favourable harvests and 2011 will probably add to this. The strength of Martinbrough is becoming well-supported by the greater Wairarapa region in general. Gladstone in particular is a strong performing area, and the Urlar wines are standouts. Proprietors Angus and Davinia Thomson with winemaker Guy McMaster are just fashioning better and better wines. The house style is one of richness, texture and considerable flavour interest as well as complexity. I reviewed the range of wines in November 2010, but had the opportunity of tasting them again with four more months of bottle-age on them. My descriptions and scores were pretty much identical this time to the earlier ones, with the exception of the Pinot Gris 2009, which has earned a higher rating. I have added the updated review, and also a review for the Noble Riesling 2009, previously not tasted. This is a very fine range of wines. www.urlar.co.nz
