Valli Vineyards 2013 Riesling and 2012 Pinot Noir

11-Dec-2013
Grant Taylor has been part of the fabric of the Otago wine industry for two decades and in that time has earned the greatest respect as one of the best and most successful winemakers in the region as well as being one of the most influential and positive supporters. Grant’s personal wine under the ‘Valli’ name, respecting his great-great grandfather Giuseppe Valli, an Italian immigrant with a winemaking background, was established in 1998. With Valli, Grant pioneered the Pinot Noir expressions of the different growing sub-regions of Otago, and he remains the finest proponent in this course today. The Valli Pinot Noirs speak superbly of the regionality of the Gibbston, Bannockburn and Waitaki growing districts, showing the highest quality. This quality is based on the wonderful fruit sources of vineyards he draws the grapes from and his unequalled experience in their sensitive handling. In this review, I assess the new release 2012 Pinot Noirs from these four areas, the vintage seen in Otago as an exceptionally good one. Riesling is recognised as the other terroir-expressive variety, and with this release, a Waitaki Valley Riesling joins the Alexandra Old Vine Riesling that has previously accompanied the red wines. www.valliwine.com
