Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ 2014 Dry Riesling, 2013 Pinot Noir and Merlot/Cabernet

04-Jun-2015
A number of distinguished New Zealand wine critics have gone on record in saying words to the effect of recommending Villa Maria’s ‘Cellar Selection’ wines as the best value and quality ambassadors of wines from this country. I agree whole-heartedly, and so do most of the wine judges in New Zealand selecting numerous wines from this ‘middle tier’ from Villa Maria as gold medal and trophy winning wines for over a decade. The wines clearly benefit from the flow-on effect in the viticultural and winemaking teams creating the superb ‘Single Vineyard’ and ‘Reserve’ bottlings, but I know they also put in a great deal of effort to make these wines complete in their own right through astute blending and balance. This creates wines of harmony and accessibility, which are traits desired by consumers and rewarded on the show circuit. They possess archetype varietal character and express regionality. You general can’t go wrong with a Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ wine if you want to enjoy a benchmark style. Here, I review the 2014 Marlborough Dry Riesling. 2013 Marlborough Pinot Noir and 2013 Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet. www.villamaria.co.nz
