Villa Maria Cellar Selection Grenache 2014

05-Oct-2015
Villa Maria is a most progressive company and the most successful on the show circuit as results have consistently shown over the years. However, it is not just the ‘Reserve’ and ‘Single Vineyard’ bottlings that claim all the glory, but also the middle and more accessible ‘Cellar Selection’ and often ‘Private Bin’ wines. There’s a fair amount of innovation filtering down from the top labels for the general consumer to experience. One such wine that exemplifies this is the ‘Cellar Selection’ Grenache 2014. Though Grenache is widely grown in global terms, it is rare in New Zealand. Villa Maria have only 1 ha, planted in the Gimblett Gravels. Only five bottlings have been made in a decade of vintages. This wine is made with a portion incorporating the ‘Vernou Roll’ method where the 900 L fermentation cuves can be sealed and rolled 360° in their cradles for a unique submerging of the cap for more complex aromatics and tannin structure. I review the 2014 vintage wine here. www.villamaria.co.nz
