Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

19-Jun-2015
For a relatively new variety in New Zealand the Syrah programme at Villa Maria has quickly joined that of the Bordeaux-varietals and Pinot Noir in terms of success in judgings and tastings and consumer acceptance. The style of the wines made under the Villa Maria tiers appears to be dependant to a large degree on the source of the fruit. The Gimblett Gravels grapes tend to make the ‘Reserve’ styled wines, as they have a firmer and more ageworthy character. Fruit from the Bridge Pa Triangle can be a major component for the ‘Cellar Selection’ wines which are made to be more accessible and aromatic. This is the situation in 2013, but Nick Picone, who is the company’s new chief winemaker reckons the ‘Reserve’ and ‘Cellar Selection’ wines have never been closer. Here, I review the 2013 ‘Cellar Selection’ Syrah. www.villamaria.co.nz
