Villa Maria’s 2010 ‘Reserve’ Bordeaux-Varietal Reds

23-Mar-2012

In every category of wine, Villa Maria is a champion. One must recognise the ability of the Villa Maria Estate enterprise, led by Sir George Fistonich, the company he founded in 1961. In every tier of wine and under every brand, the wines offer undisputed quality and great value. I've been a fan of the Villa Maria ‘Reserve' Bordeaux-varietal reds for a quarter of a century, since the 1980s, and even then, they were among the leaders of their field, winning gold medals galore. Today, Villa Maria's vineyard holdings in the Gimblett Gravels, the ‘Omahu Gravels', the ‘Twyford Gravels' and the ‘Ngakirikiri' vineyard are supplemented by fruit from other Gimblett Gravels sites such as the famous ‘Newton's ‘Cornerstone' vineyard. The result is ultra-high quality fruit that goes into the ‘Reserve' wines for Villa Maria, Vidals and Esk Valley. The quality is recognised and repeatedly rewarded by gold medals and trophies. Here are the 2010 ‘Reserve' Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot wines. The Merlot has just been awarded Trophy for Champion Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot the Heritage Rose Bowl based on a showing of three vintages, these being the 2009, 2005 and 2001, at the 2012 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. www.villamaria.co.nz
