Vinoptima – Gewurztraminer Specialist

26-Jul-2013
Part of the New Zealand wine industry pioneering Nobilo family, Nick Nobilo has seen it all. His career spans the beginnings of the modern age of wine in this country in the late 1960s and early 1970s to this day. Along the way, he has been part of a growing family-owned operation that became one of the country’s most important, to a multi-national global player, and now back to a one-man winegrowing business in control of his own destiny. Vinoptima was established from Nick’s passion gained from the intimate work he had with the Gewurztraminer variety grown in the Gisborne region since the early 1980s. Establishing his 9.7 ha vineyard in the Ormond district, and a purpose-built winery on-site solely for the production of his wine in 2000, his first release was the 2003 vintage ‘Reserve’ Gewurztraminer. That wine and those following have received critical acclaim nationally and abroad. Vinoptima remains a model for the state-of-art and continually evolving operation geared to make the very finest possible Gewurztraminer wine in the world. Here, I review the new second tier ‘Bond Road’ 2009, the ‘Reserve’ 2008 and Noble 2007 Gewurztraminers, these being the current releases from Nick Nobilo. www.vinoptima.co.nz
