Volcanic Hills 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2012 Pinot Noirs

15-Apr-2014
Sean Beer and Brent Park will have completed their second vintage in their winery in Rotorua this year. Working at Delegats originally, they established Volcanic Hills in 2009 as a ‘virtual winery’. Their model was to source fruit from around the country, and have wine made at contract facilities, thus avoiding the need for set-up capital and enable having a brand released on the market quickly. However, the Beer and Park families had the opportunity of setting up their own winery plus tasting room facility at the ‘Skyline’ gondola at Rotorua, in a region where they knew they could also enjoy a suitable lifestyle, so a change of tack! The winery is at the base of the gondola terminal and the tasting room is at the top. There, not only can they make their wine, but see people enjoy it first-hand. They have the field to themselves, as there is no other wine producing operation in the district. Here, I review the new release 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris from Marlborough, and 2012 Central Otago Pinot Noirs. www.volcanichills.co.nz
