Volcanic Hills 2014 Whites and 2013 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

20-Oct-2014
As with many winemakers working for others, Sean Beer and Brent Park wanted to have their own label.  They established ‘Volcanic Hills’ as a virtual winery in 2009, buying fruit and making it in contracted facilities. However, as does happen, they had the opportunity turning virtual into reality and set up their own winery in Rotorua at the base of the ‘Skyline’ gondola, with a tasting room at the top. Being the only winery in Rotorua, they’ve developed a niche market and the Beer and Park families now live close to people, cities and markets, rather than being out in a remote area. Sean and Brent source fruit and juice from Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough and Central Otago, tinkering it to their winery where it is vinified. Having completed their third vintage in it, the winery and the model of operating have proven to work well. Their sales model is also structured, so that it is only sold directly at the cellar door, by mail order and on-premise, rather than at traditional retail stores. www.volcanichills.co.nz
