Waipara Hills 2012 Riesling and Pinot Noir

10-Sep-2013
It is generally accepted that the Waipara Valley’s signature varieties are Riesling and Pinot Noir, each performing consistently well with distinctive characteristics that are imparted by the region’s climate, geology and geology. The Riesling wines often have an exotic jasmine floral expression, and the Pinot Noirs can have a darker fruit character and stronger structure than such a southerly latitude might indicate. The Waipara Hills wines from New Zealand Vineyard Estates are good examples. The fruit for the wines is under the care of viticulturist Jean-Luc Dufour, originally from Switzerland, but overseeing the ‘Home Block’ in Waipara for 16 years now. Simon McGeorge is the winemaker, with extensive experience in California and France as well as in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, but in charge at Waipara Hills since 2006.
