Waipara Hills 2014 Riesling and Pinot Gris

22-Apr-2015
The Waipara Valley has a strong record with Riesling. The variety is seen as the premier white grape, standing alongside the red Pinot Noir in the region, as producing the best wines. With vine and vineyard maturity, it is becoming clear that the aromatic varieties in general perform especially well, with the specialist Gewurztraminer noteworthy for many years, now being joined by the more popular Pinot Gris. Many of the best Riesling wines appear to possess an exotic jasmine lift and tangerine citrus note, and it will be fascinating to see what traits emerge with Pinot Gris.

Simon McGeorge of Waipara Hills has enjoyed considerable acclaim for his bottlings of Riesling and Pinot Gris over the years, not only for the top ‘Equinox’ tier, but also for the more widely available premium Waipara Hills range. From this latter range, the 2013 Riesling was selected as a benchmark example of New Zealand for recent global Master of Wine tutorials.
