Waipara West 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir

20-Aug-2013
The land for the Waipara West vineyard was purchased in 1989 and is owned by London wine merchant Paul Tutton, his artist wife Olga Sienko, his sister Vic Tutton who is the business administrator and her husband Lindsay Hill, the viticulturist. The vineyard, with around 25 ha of vines, is further inland and higher in altitude than most of the other Waipara vineyards providing warmer temperatures and less frost risk. A wide range of varieties is planted: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling in white, and Pinot Noir, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in red, making a broad portfolio of wines. The wines are made at the winery on-site, and over the years have had a European style that particularly suited serving with food. Jeff Sinnott came on board for the 2012 vintage in a consulting winemaking role. This has seen a stylistic change in the wines. Here are my reviews of three of the new releases. www.waiparawest.com
