Wairau River 2014 Riesling, Albarino, Chardonnay and Merlot

15-May-2015
Although the Rose family were one of the earliest grapegrowers in Marlborough, they’ve kept pace with the development in styles and varieties that make the region one of the world’s most exciting vignobles. Within the Wairau River estate, there are over 200 ha of vines spread over 8 vineyards. Most is devoted to the classical varieties, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling. However, the Rose family are not averse with quantities of something different. Here I review the latest 2014 Riesling and Chardonnay, representing what’s well-established, and the 2014 Albarino and Merlot, the former from a small first yield, and the latter from a variety deemed unsuited to the area. www.wairauriverwines.com
