Waitapu Estate 2010 Vintage Red Release

13-Apr-2012

The Northland vineyards, though separated by considerable distances and are very individualistic, seem to have commonalities – the enthusiasm and determination of their owners and a focus on interesting and alternative red varieties. The warmer climate, though conducive to good ripening, also has its drawbacks with greater incidence of humidity-related diseases, so viticultural zeal is required. Eric and Sandra Shackleton are gradually building the output of their 4.85 ha ‘Waitapu Estate' vineyard near Ahipara near Kaitaia. Planting in 2000, the Shackletons are finding particular favour with Pinotage, supported by the good performance of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Sangiovese. The services of Alan Collinson at nearby Okahu Estate are contracted in making the wines. Here are reviews of two 2010 reds. www.waitapuestate.co.nz
