Woollaston and Mahana 2011 Nelson Pinot Noirs

18-Apr-2013

The Pinot Noir 2013 conference earlier this year boosted the credibility of Woollaston Estate immeasurably. The company’s 2010 Pinot Noir was selected for the ‘New Zealand Pinot Noir Regional Tasting’ and represented the Nelson district along with the Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir of the same vintage. Woollaston Estates has always had Pinot Noir as its signature red ever since it was established in 2000. Vineyard manager Julian Coakley has now brought the 30 ha of vineyards to certified BioGro organic status, and with Shane Munn continuing the winemaking work of Andrew Sutherland, the focus on taking the variety to new heights has been increased. I review two new 2011 vintage Pinot Noirs, the ‘estate’ wine and the ‘Mahana’ reserve-styled expression, initially made by Andrew Sutherland and finished by Shane Munn. They signal things are on the move up. www.woollaston.co.nz
