Woollaston ‘Mahana’ Aromatic Releases

28-Feb-2012

The ‘sleeping giant' title could be applied to Nelson's Woollaston Estates. This impressive operation in Upper Moutere, established in 2000 as a collaboration between Philip and Chan Woollaston and Glenn and Renée Schaefer, has been steadily realising its potential. The last 12 months have seen some significant markers and exciting wines and times no doubt lie ahead. In March last year, the 50 ha of vineyard achieved full certification organic under BioGro. The company's two vineyards, ‘Mahana' in the Upper Moutere and ‘Burke's Bank' on the Waimea Plains are managed by Julian Coakley, with Woollaston since 2001. Biodynamic practices are being employed now. Late last year, Shane Munn joined Woollaston Estates as winemaker, Shane previously with James Millton, the biodynamic wine guru at Gisborne for a number of years. The release of a new "ultra-premium” label called ‘Mahana' is a signal of the Woollaston giant awakening. Here are my reviews of two aromatic ‘Mahana' wines. www.woollaston.co.nz
