Wrights 2014 Chardonnay, Reserve Chardonnay and Fume Blanc

09-Jun-2015
Geoff and Nicola Wright are carving out a unique space in Gisborne’s wine scene. From simple and early beginnings in 2000, they have grown to become one of the districts unique and adventurous producers, all through hands-on hard work. They now own three vineyards with access to some of the region’s oldest vines. The home ‘Terrace’ Vineyard in Ormond was planted in 2005 and measues near 5 ha. They also own the ‘Valley’ vineyard in Ormond, this formerly owned by Benson and Revington, the 5 ha with 30+ y.o. Gewurztraminer and other vines. The ‘Coast’ vineyard in Manutuke also has 30+ y.o. vines, this formerly being the Thorpe’s ‘Whitecliff’ operation, and it is the Wright’s winery and cellar door, and a 7 ha vineyard. The vineyards are managed organically and biodynamically and fully AsureQuality certified. Recent releases suggest the Wrights are becoming more confident in their winemaking styles, and the marketing is certainly stronger, the wines gaining presence, especially with ‘The Natural Wine Co. brand. However, it is the ‘Wright’s’ label that is the heart of their venture. Here, I review the 2014 classic or estate Chardonnay, the ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay, and a Fume Blanc made with skin contact a la ‘orange wine’. www.wrightswines.co.nz
