Wrights Vineyard – Thoroughly Natural in Gisborne

16-Nov-2012
Geoff Wright's family has a winegrowing history stretching back to the 1930s in the Kumeu district. Establishing his business in 2000, Geoff made his first ‘GW' wines from purchased fruit from the 2001 vintage at Tairawhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne, and nowadays, he and his wife Nicola manage over 12 ha of vines planted in two sites, the ‘Terrace' and ‘Valley' vineyards in the Ormond Valley. The land is managed organically and biodynamically and fully AsureQuality certified. The varieties grown are Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and the wines vinified on site at their winery set up in 2009. This year, the Wrights launched a range of wines under ‘The Natural Wine Company' brand. With the ability to source fruit outside of Gisborne, the wines are made from grapes grown using natural farming methods and endorses conservation with proceeds of sales going to the Royal Forest & Bird Society of New Zealand. www.wrightswines.co.nz
