Black Barn Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet Franc 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Jun-2013
Dark, ruby-red colour with purple hues, lighter on edge. The nose is fresh and elegant with fragrant aromatics of focussed redcurrant fruit along with light leaf and fresh herb notes, the oaking very sensitive and in the background. Medium bodied, the fruit is fresh, lifted and light, showing lively and juicy herb-infused redcurrant flavours. This is supported by moderately extracted, fine-grained tannins that form a good tight core to the palate. The textures are balanced by good acid liveliness and carry the sweet fruit to a brisk, lingering finish with herbs and redcurrants. This is an elegant, fresh-fruited Merlot based wine with liveliness and juiciness. Match with Mediterranean cuisine over the next 4-5+ years. A blend of 58% Merlot, 25% Malbec and 17% Cabernet Franc from the Havelock Hills, fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 18% new French oak. 17.5-/20 Jun 2013 RRP $32.90
