Craggy Range ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 08-Apr-2015
Very full, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has a tightly concentrated and intense, deep nose of ripe black berried fruits infused with black pepper, ink and an amalgam of minerals, tar and spicy oak. With aeration, black and violet florals blossom to lift the aromatics. Medium-bodied, the palate features a tight core of black fruits and black pepper lifted by violet floral notes. Earth, minerals and spicy oak elements add complexing detail. The fruit is guided by refined, flowery, supple tannins and a satin-like structure, and soft acidity enhances the balance. As the wine flows, waves of black pepper, Asian spices and oak unfold, leading to a fine-textured, dry, long-lingering finish. This is a refined, black-fruited, spicy Syrah with concentration and satiny textures. Match with beef, lamb and game meat dishes over the next 6-8 years. Syrah fruit from the ‘Gimblett Gravels’ vineyard, 90% hand-picked and fermented with 5% whole clusters to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 22% new French oak barriques. 19.0-/20 Apr 2015 RRP $31.95
