Craggy Range ‘Te Kahu’ ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 08-Apr-2015
73% Merlot, 13% Malbec, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Gimblett Gravels’ vineyard, 15% hand-picked and fermented to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 15% new oak barriques. Very full, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has a soft, finely presented nose of ripe blackberry and dark red plum fruit harmoniously entwined with red and blackcurrant elements and delicate, spicy oak. The purity of the primary fruit is a feature, and this is essence of refinement and finesse. Medium-full bodied and elegantly proportioned, the fruit expression is softly restrained, but the palate core unfolds to show ripe black plum and blackcurrant fruit flavours nuanced by subtle herb and spicy oak notes. The tannins ae supple and fine-grained and the wine flows smoothly with good acid tension, leading to a light, slender, dry currant and herb-laced finish. This is an elegant, restrained and harmonious Merlot-based red with fine and supple structure. Match with most red meat dishes and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-8+ years. 18.0+/20 Apr 2015 RRP $27.95
