Esk Valley Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 16-Dec-2014
Very dark, black-red colour with youthful purple hues on edge. The nose is full in volume with a harmonious amalgam of ripe blackberry, black plums, black and redcurrants and spicy black fruits. Some subtle notes of black earth and iron unfold with aeration. Medium-full bodied, sweet and fleshy fruit flavours of ripe dark plums, red and black currants fill the palate. This is open and accessible, quite fruit focussed, with sensitive oaking. The extraction and tannins grow in presence to balance the fruit sweetness, providing structure and grip that carries through to a fulsome, soft, dry finish. This is a bright, up-front black plum and curranty fruited Merlot blend with an open, well-structured palate. Match with casseroles, game meat and hard cheeses over the next 5-6+ years. 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Franc from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 20% new French oak barriques. 18.0+/20 Dec 2014 RRP $19.95
