Mahurangi River ‘ Mainly Malbec’ Matakana Malbec/Merlot 2010

Malbec from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 05-Dec-2012
Full, very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour. This has a very full, solid and densely concentrated bouquet of ripe, spicy black fruits along with complexing iron-earth, dark herb and cedary oak aromas, along with funky game-like detail. Full-bodied, this is up-front with bold flavours of ripe, dark plums and liquorice, along with spices and oak cedar. Some game and earthy complexity is present behind the fruit. The palate is robustly structured with a rounded mouthfeel underlined by firm, grainy, driven tannins. The fulsome flavours and textures lead to a firm, dry and sustained finish with oak notes. This is a full-bodied, black-fruited Malbec-based wine with plenty of liquorice and savoury, earthy interest and fulsome extraction. Serve with slow-cooked game meat over the next 6-8+ years. Estate fruit, 65% Malbec and 35% Merlot indigenous yeast fermented to 14.2% alc., the wine spending 20 days on skins and aged 12 months in 33% new French oak barriques. 250 cases made. 17.5+/20 Dec 2012 RRP $39.00
