Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 11-May-2015
Full, very dark, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is very fine and tightly concentrated with elegant, but intense aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with black pepper, spices, tar and black minerals, along with liquorice essence and lifted oak detail. Medium-full bodied, tightly concentrated, but sweetly ripe flavours of black berried fruits, plums, liquorice and black pepper form a deep and refined core. Spicy oak and iron-earth complexities add to the interest. The fruit extract and fine, powdery tannin grip provide a stylish balance to the fruit succulence and the palate has a satin-like flow that carries to a very long, concentrated finish with spice, liquorice and black pepper flavours. This is a very concentrated, refined, ripe Syrah with rich black fruits and a beautifully fine-textured structure. Match with lamb, beef, venison and hard cheeses over the next 10+ years. Syrah fruit, 84% from the ‘Mere Road’ and 16% from the ‘Trust Vineyard’ sites, hand-picked , given a cold soak and fermented with whole berries, partly in a French ‘Integrale’ rotating fermentor barrels to 13.6% alc., the wine spending 14-23 days on skins post ferment and aged 17 months in 46% new French oak hogsheads. 19.0/20 May 2015 RRP $49.95
