Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ ‘Trust Vineyard’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 15-Jun-2015
Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, lighter on rim and youthful in appearance. The nose is full, but well-proportioned with powerfully deep and concentrated aromas of vibrant, ripe black fruits complexed by black pepper, Asian spices, nuances of iron-earth and toasty oak. The aromatics are primary and youthfully fresh, and reveal black floral perfumes with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate is fulsome with mouthfilling, ripe, lusciously vibrant flavours of blackberry fruits interwoven with spices, black pepper and oak toast. The mouthfeel is bright and lively with fresh, lacy acidity that enhances the fruit succulence. Fine-grained tannins provide a firm, underlying line that guides the wine to a very long, spicy, toasty and aromatic finish with pepper and florals. This is a vibrant, succulently rich, black-fruited Syrah with pepper, spices and oak toast, supported by fine structure. Serve with lamb, beef, venison and game meat over the next 8-10 years. Hand-picked fruit, 87% from the ‘Trust’ vineyard and 13% from the ‘Mere Road’ site, destemmed, and fermented in oak, open top fermenters and stainless-steel to 13.2% alc., the wine spending 17 days on skins post ferment and aged 15 months in 41% new 300 L hogsheads, 80% French and 20% American. 19.0+/20 Jun 2015 RRP $45.00
