Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 14-Mar-2011
As for most of the Gimblett Gravels producers, Syrah has become a star varietal for Mills Reef. Full, deep, purple hued ruby-red in colour, this has a very finely expressed, and tightly bound bouquet with spicy black fruits along with some floral perfumes, complexed by savoury, meaty game notes. An elegant and stylishly proportioned wine at 13.0% alc., the flavours are based on a core of black, peppery fruits, violet florals and exotic spices, as well as sweet oak. Some brett is present, adding complexing savouriness. The extraction is very fine, allowing a ‘peacock's tail' of lifted flavours on the finish. Fruit from the ‘Trust' and ‘Mere Road' sites given a cold soak. Following fermentation, the wine was aged 13 months in oak. Drink with barbecued red meat, venison in particular over the next 4-5 years. 17.5+/20 Mar 2011 RRP $24.95
