Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Jun-2012
Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is fresh and elegant with Merlot aromas of dark berry fruit, savoury plums and tobacco with fruit-cake. Some spice and liquorice from the Malbec unfolds in the glass. Medium-full-bodied, sweet, juicy plum and spicy fruit flavours show with brightness and lusciousness. The tannins are supple and in the background, providing good support and good acidity enlivens the richness of the palate. Savoury and spicy elements build, and with the oak, this has good depth. The mouthfeel is smooth and plush, and leads to a long, soft finish of black fruits. This is an attractively bright, plush and juicy Merlot-based with spicy, savoury interest. Match with hearty pastas and grilled or barbecued red meat dishes over the next 4-6 years. 65% Merlot, 30% Malbec and 5% Cabernet France from two Hawke's Bay sites, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 65% French and 35% American oak. 18.0/20 Jun 2012 RRP $24.95
