Quarter Acre Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Malbec 2011

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Feb-2013
A blend of 80% Merlot, 18% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc from a single vineyard in Havelock North fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Dark ruby-red colour with good depth, and some lighter purple hues on rim. The bouquet is elegant with bright and lifted, ripe, dark red plum fruit aromas along with florals, liquorice, tobacco and oak cedar, expressed with refinement and restraint. Medium-full bodied, subtly decadent, spicy, sweet red plum fruit flavours are interwoven with creamy, cedary oak. Nuances of liquorice and milk chocolate add to the detail and interest. This has fine-grained tannin textures with some enlivening acid raciness providing linear drive and energy that carries through to a lingering, elegant finish. This is a refined, rich and spicy Merlot with fine textures, creaminess and liveliness. Match with grilled and roasted red meats and hard cheeses over the next 8-10 years. 18.5+/20 Feb 2013 RRP $29.95
